3S-GTE & 5S-FE Check Engine light and Engine Codes:

PDF File of more information also available by clicking here.

The ECU contains a built-in, self-diagnosis system which detects troubles within the engine signal network and which gives a warning by flashing the "CHECK" engine light on the instrument panel.

System malfunctions can be analyzed by reading the code(s) reproduced by this warning light. For example, if the warning light blinks _|¯|_|¯|__|¯|_ this means code 21, indicating trouble with the Oxygen Sensor.

OUTPUT OF DIAGNOSTIC CODES

To obtain an output of diagnostic codes, proceed as follows:

1. Initial conditions

(a) Battery voltage 11V or more
(b) Throttle valve fully closed (throttle position sensor IDL points closed)
(c) Transmission in neutral position
(d) Accessories switched OFF
(e) Engine at normal operating temperature

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Do not start the engine.

3. Using SST (09843-18020) [or a piece of plain electrical wire], connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector.

4. Read the diagnostic code as indicated by the number of flashes of the "CHECK" engine warning light.
